In the 14th and 15th centuries, the hillsides of Marly were covered with vines, producing the wine served at the royal table; the barrels were dispatched from the port at Marly along the Seine to Paris.  In the 18th century, the goods traffic of the port intensified and in 1790, Port-Marly became an independent commune
In the 19th century, many people from the provinces, who had suffered due to the mass exodus of the population towards the capital, settled in Port-Marly; factories were created, and paper and printed fabric industries were established.  During the same period, Alexandre Dumas, famous author of "The Three Musketeers", acquired land on the town’s hillside to build his home, the Château de Monte-Cristo.  Camille Corot also stayed in Port-Marly, at the Château des Lions where he made several sketches, including the "Promenade au château des lions" and "Le tournant de la Seine."

Our favorite ! The towpath along the Seine and the barges, which provided a vista and shelter for many artists!
